New Record Set in Battle of Malta Main Event 3 Nov 11:51 by Jonathan Raab

A new record was set at The Battle of Malta on Sunday 2nd November, 2025. By the time registration closed in the final turbo starting day of the €600 showpiece event, a further 992 players had joined, bringing the final total up to 6,039 entries. This represents an increase of 240 buy-ins on the 2024 Autumn Edition. The final prize pool stands at €2,728,270 with a first prize of over €250,000 awaiting the winner, who will be crowned on Wednesday.

A further 149 players from the final flight joined those who had already booked their seats in Day 2. In the evening Day 2 began, with 811 players taking their seats, all assured of a payout of at least €900. Their number included six former Battle of Malta champions, including Cosme Gomez Martinez, who won the Autumn edition in 2024. Also through, with the third biggest stack at the start of Day 2, was Vasileios Zisis, who Gomez Martinez defeated heads-up this time last year, when his Greek opponent fell just short of retaining the title he won in the Spring edition.

Defending champion Adrian Ziemichod also made it into Day 2, as did 2023 Champion Gabriele Re and Nicodemo Piccolo, the winner of the very first Battle of Malta in 2012. Dimitrios Anastasakis, the 2022 Autumn winner completed the line of of former champions looking to become the first double winner.

Overall it was another very busy day in the Eden Arena and Casino Malta, at the Intercontinental Hotel in St Julian’s. Hundreds of players were seated throughout the day, with many of the side events also bursting at the seams. Over 500 players entered the €300 Shark Bay EuroRounders Bounty and close to 400 took their seats in the €1,100 High Roller. Both of these events will grow further on Monday as registration in each remains open during the first three levels after the restart.

Six levels were played on Day 2 in the Main Event, with the clock increased to 60-minutes. As is always the case, the exits came thick and fast at the start of the day, which was preceded by a short memorial ceremony for the much loved dealer Gianni Bevitori, who died earlier this year. A chef, a musician and an all-round wonderful person who is very much missed by all. RIP Gianni.

Five Champions Eliminated, One Remains

Over a quarter of the field were eliminated in the first level of the day, including Nicodemo Piccolo. When he became the inaugural Champion in 2012, he outlasted a field of 349 players. He scooped €35,000 back then, which is less than the 7th place finisher will receive this year.

Three of the other former champions were also eliminated as the day progressed. Cosme Gomez Martinez found the rail later in the day, departing in 396th for €1,800. The next to go was defending champ Adrian Ziemichod, who finally succumbed in 305th, collecting €2,300 after nursing a below average stack for most of the day. Soon after, Dimitrios Anastasakis departed in 317th, collecting the same amount.

Vasileios Zisis went close to making it into Day 3, but was taken out in 226th place during the last level of the day. He cashed for €2,600 but also won a €1,500 package to the Spring 2026 edition, as a bonus for being the chip leader from his starting day.

The only former champion who made it into Day 3 is Gabriele Re, who ended the day 1.15m chips, in 65th place of the 196 who will return on Monday.

Side Event Winners

Only two tournaments were played out to a conclusion on Sunday. The second outing of the White Knight was much busier than its first iteration. Just shy of 200 players entered the €400 buy-in tournament, creating a prize pool in excess of over €60,000. It ended after a six-way even chop, that left a bit more for the top three to play for. Petros Taki from Cyprus took down the trophy and the €8,500 first prize. The Sviten had 60 entries and was won by Edvin Ujhazi for €5,000.

Full results of these events can be found in the results section of the blog.

Estonia’s Herli Olop was kind enough to share a hand with the live coverage team. Said Estonian was seated in the Big Blind, and was faced with a 450,000 shove from “Mr. X” UTG. Olop made the call, and the players revealed their holdings. Mr. X tabled pocket eights, but Olop’s ace-king connected on the board. As such, Olop sent yet another victim to the rail, as he improved his stack further.

Joakim Berg fancied an opening to 50,000 from the Hi-jack. Gianluca Cabitza made the call from the Button, and Cristian-Marius Campan also joined the fun from the Small Blind.

After an initial check from Campan on the JQK flop, Berg fired a 75,000 continuation bet. Cabitza made the call before Campan got out of the way.

No slowing down from Berg, who continued for 135,000. Again, Cabitza made the call. The dealer revealed the 2 on the river; Berg spent perhaps four minutes in the tank before betting 340,000. Cabitza made the call within two seconds; Berg relieved a heavy sigh, before mucking his hand. There was no showdown, and Cabitza was awarded the pot.

Seated UTG, Calin Ciolte opened to 40,000. Danijel Tatarovic three-bet to 115,000 from UTG+2, and Ciolte made the call.

First to act, Ciolte checked the 464 flop, and Tatarovic bet 75,000. Without much hesitation, Ciolte made it 175,000 to go. Tatarovic moved all in for 540,000, and Ciolte made the call.

Danijel Tatarovic: AA
Calin Ciolte: KK

A brutal scenario for kings, and Ciolte wasn’t saved by the Q3 runout. As such, Tatorovic received a full double-up.

Danijel Tatarovic: 1,300,000
Calin Ciolte: 125,000

Homeward Bound 3 Nov 01:32 by Jonathan Raab

It’s time for me to go home, otherwise I won’t wake up in time to write the story of Sunday at the Battle of Malta article, which will be posted tomorrow morning. Just before I go, a quick update on our former BOM Champions. There were four in the last time we reported on their progress, but tonight is the night, when four becomes two. However, with still more play to come before the night is over, their number could dwindle further.

  • Dimitrios Anastasakis went out in 318th place, cashing for €2,300
  • Defending champion Adrian Ziemichod was the next to bite the felt, busting in 305th, also for €2,300

This leaves Gabriele Re and Vasileios Zisis as the only remaining Battle of Malta Champions. Until next time, goodnight and goodluck!

They’re still falling at a pretty fast rate in the Main Event, with another hundred poker souls departing, but not empty handed. Here are the latest players to have their status changed to “eliminated.”

There were actually five former Battle of Malta Main Event winners still in when we reported that there were four, our bad, apologies to Cosme Gomez Martinez, who was the champion this time last year. However, there are definitely now only four still left in, as Cosme went out in 396th place, for €1,800.

Sebastian Kos moved all in for 239,000 from the Hi-jack. After receiving the count, Santino Arigo made the call from the Small Blind.

Sebastian Kos: 77
Santino Arigo: 99

Kos was on the verge of being unliminated, but the 3872K board had different plans. Kos doubled through Arigo and is very much still in it.

What’s Going On? 3 Nov 00:31 by Jonathan Raab

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it”

With that thought in mind, let’s take a look at what’s going on at the Battle of Malta, right here, right now!

Main Event Day 2

Day 2 of the Main Event is swimming along nicely, although quite a few have drowned, unable to tread water any longer. Over 400 of the players who started the day have now been eliminated, with just over 350 left in situation. Our four former Battle of Malta champions are all still in the mix, but for how much longer?

Qui Gioco High Roller

The High Roller is now in the 6th level of the day, with ten due to be played. Registration for this remains open for the first 2 hours of play on Day 2. So far, 320 players have joined the tournament and the €300,000 guarantee has recently been exceeded.

Side Events

The €400 White Knight is now on the final table with just six players left, including Bulgarian Aleks Georgiev. The Sviten is now down to 13 players, with the most recent exit being that of local mixed games fanatic Antoine Degiorgio, unlucky fella!

The Sharkbay EuroRounders Bounty Day 1 has ended, with 259 of the 554 still in. Registration remains open in this one for the first three levels of Day 2.

UTG+2, James Heeney opened to 30,000. Andrea Pappalardo made the call from the Lo-jack, before Luigi Shehadeh made it 135,000 from the Big Blind. Heeney then moved all in for roughly 250,000; Pappalardo swiftly folded before Shehadeh made the call.

James Heeney: KK
Luigi Shehadeh: TT

Heeney was looking good for a double-up, but, as we all know, poker can be a brutal game at times. As the board ran out 954AT, Shehadeh was awarded the best hand with a set of tens. He sent Heeney to the rail in three hundred sixtieth place for €2,050.

Luigi Shehadeh: 1,535,000

ZZ Tops Former Winners Chip Counts 2 Nov 22:23 by Christoffer

Level 17: 5,000/10,000 (10,000)
Entries: 494/6,039
Prize Pool: €2,728,970

I thought it was due time to check in on some former champions. First, I paid Table 61 a visit, where the most recent champion, Adrian Ziemichod, was seated. After an initial opening from Marko Olop to 24,000, Alexandru Boboc (UTG+1), Candido Cappiello (Hi-jack), and Ziemichod (Button) all made the call.

First to act, Olop bet 60,000 on the 876 straight flush flop. Boboc quickly folded before Cappiello put in a 600,000 raise, big enough to force Olop all in. Olop committed to the call for his tournament life after Ziemichod folded.

Candido Cappiello: KT
Marko Olop: AA

Cappiello had flopped a flush, but Olop had some outs holding the A. He didn’t get there on the J8 runout, though, and he bid farewell in five hundred fifty-ninth place for €1,400.

Candidi Cappiello: 1,200,000
Adrian Ziemichod: 256,000
Marko Olop: 0

Vasileios Zisis, who won the 2024 Battle of Malta Spring Edition €600 Main Event and finished second in the 2024 Battle of Malta Autumn Edition €600 Main Event, sits at a healthy stack with roughly 1,200,000. Gabriele Re (2023 Battle of Malta Autumn Edition €600 Main Event Winner) plays 1,175,000, while Dimitrios Anastasakis (2022 Battle of Malta Autumn Edition €600 Main Event Winner) has a 615,000 stack.

Veni, Vidi, Non Vici! 2 Nov 22:19 by Jonathan Raab

Here’s the latest batch of players who came, saw, but failed to conquer the Battle of Malta Main Event. They do take something home for the efforts though.

Amongst this lot is Nicodema Piccolo, the winner of the very first Battle of Malta, in 2012. He finished in 627th place, taking home €1,200.

While the Main Event is our main focus on this blog, we also like to keep you informed about what else is going down here at the Battle of Malta Autumn Edition.

The Quoi Gioco €1,100 High Roller started recently and is now in the second level of the day, with over 170 entries so far. The Sharkbay EuroRounders €300 Bounty has over 500 entries, with late registration still open.

The White Knight is on its 3rd break, with 24 of the 1976 who entered still in with a shout of taking home the trophy and the €13,420 first prize.

The Sviten is on its 2nd break of the day, with registration now closed and 27 of the 60 starters still Drawmaha-ing away. Former champion Soner Vanelderen is still in with chance of going back-to-back and Antione Degiorgio is also still in the mix.

Johansson took a solid lead on the QJ6 flop, and he never looked back on the 32 runout. He doubled up, and took a considerable chunk out of the Iszczuk stack.

Wandering the tournament area, I ran into an acquaintance, Argiris Loizos. We chatted for a minute, and he told me he was looking for his friend, Theodoros Ampelikiotis. I opened up PokerLens and tried to help him locate Ampelikiotis; funny enough, he was seated five metres right in front of us at Table 23. We decided to rail him one hand.

Action folded to him, and he moved all in for 144,000 from the Small Blind. After receiving the count, Claus Spieckermann made the call from the Big Blind.

Theodoros Ampelikiotis: A6
Claus Spickermann: A3

Things were looking good for Ampelikiotis, and there was no bigger sweat on the JTK flop. The T turn concerned him, though, and Spickermann sealed the deal with a flush on the 7 river.

Claus Spickermann: 520,000
Theodoros Ampelikiotis: 0

With players falling at fast rate, there’s a quite a queue of players at the payout desk. It’s snaking all the way past the media area and into the adjoining corridor. This is probably going to be the situation for a while. I have just one thing to say to the hordes of people standing in line, mostly looking pretty miserable, as their shot at the big money has now gone.

“If you’re going to cry, keep your shades on!”

Christophe Cordeille opened to 16,000 from UTG+3. Nico Diperna made it 60,000 from the Hi-jack, before George Georgiou moved all in for 145,000 from the Small Blind. Cordeille folded swiftly before Diperna made the call.

George Georgiou: QQ
Nico Diperna: KK

Not ideal for Georgiou, and the 5A263 runout didn’t help him. He hit the rail in six hundred seventy-fourth place for €1,100.

Daniel Maunders Finds the Rail 2 Nov 20:56 by Jonathan Raab

Level 16: 4,000/8,000
Entries: 757/6,039

Former BOM runner up Daniel Maunders had the 3rd shortest chip stack at the start of the day with only 9,000 to his name. He was in seat 10 and with the button drawn to be on seat 5, he had only 4 hands before he would be on the big blind.

He didn’t waste any time, getting it all-in on the first hand, but his QJ found itself up against AK. The board missed both players, but put an eight high straight down and the pot was split, pushing Daniel up to 19,000.

PostTwo hands later he was all-in again, from under-the-gun, with pocket twos. This time he would have been quite happy to see his opponent flip over 5-2, however a five on the flop made him a bug underdog in the hand. However he had picked up a gutshot, as the 5 was accompanied by 3 and a 6. The turn slapped the much needed four down on the board and with another split, Daniel moved up to 25,000.

The next hand was his big blind and ante, leaving him just 9,000 back. Third time wasn’t lucky for Daniel, as he was dominated by KT holding K5. The flop brought another gutshot straight draw, but it missed and Daniel was sent packing, with a €900 payout for his 773rd place finish.

Floor Staff Preparing for Day 2 2 Nov 18:55 by Jonathan Raab

With the final flight now concluded, the floor staff are busy preparing the room for Day 2, which begins at 8pm. Chip bags are being sorted according to the Day 2 seating plan. Its a big operation to conduct, with 811 bags to sort out, as over 90 tables will be in play when the tournament resumes.

We don’t have the full chip counts of all 149 Day 1i survivors, but we have got details of the top three stacks from the flight, the owners of which all receive €1,500 packages to the Battle of Malta 2026 Spring Edition.

Darren Harbinson from the UK bagged the biggest stack of the flight and with 1,066,000, was the only chip millionaire to emerge from the day. Kristian Holmgren was second with 834,000 and Giorgios Katsakos was third with 704,000.

Play Ends in Day 1i of Main Event 2 Nov 17:52 by Jonathan Raab

Day 1i of the Main Event has now concluded and the chips are being counted and bagged up. There were three all-ins at the same time on different tables, but only one resulted in an exit, followed by a relief filled round of applause by those who survived the flight.

Amongst those who made it through was the Beer Poker Tour landlord, Merivan Hassan, who got through with around 250,000 chips. Relieved to have made it through and assured of an in-the-money finish, he exclaimed “I’m happy, I need a beer now.”

The remaining 149 will return at 8pm for Day 2, joining the 662 who already made it via the first eight starting days.

Sviten In Play 2 Nov 17:42 by Jonathan Raab

Today’s non-Hold’em offering is the €330 Sviten (Drawmaha) and has over 40 players in during the first level of the day.

Those already playing include Scott “Pokerbrahs” Kenyon, who is going to be streaming his play on Twitch. Also playing is JJ Hazan, who chopped last night’s PLO. David Lloyd has also just joined the game, after soft bubbling the final flight of the Main Event. He ran his AK into Kings in that, ouch. Defending Champion Soner Vanelderen is also playing, hoping to defend his title.

Another player spotted in the field is Ryan Johnson, runner up in the APAT World Championship of Amateur Poker’s Mystery Bounty Shootout. Today I’m wearing the bracelet he nearly won, hehe.

With 1hr45mins left until registration closes in the final starting flight, a new participation record has been set! The previous best of 5,799 at last year’s event has now been surpassed, with the question now being, whether it will get to 6,000. The final number will be revealed at the start of level 11, at approximately 1.40pm.

Day 1i has now grown to over 750 entries, with over 650 still playing. They are just about to go on their first break of the flight. The prize pool has now grown to over €2.6m!

New Battle of Malta Participation Record, 5,800 and Counting!

Biggest Single Day in Battle of Malta History 2 Nov 10:26 by Jonathan Raab

Saturday’s Day 1 G was the biggest ever starting day in the history of the battle of Malta. It began with over 500 players, but this grew to over 900 within the first couple of levels of the flight.

By level 2, the €1.5m guarantee on the event had been met and by the dinner break and by the first break in play there were over 1,300 entrants.  During the second session of play, the next milestone was reached when the 1,760th person bought in it, surpassing last year’s 1,759 who participated in the equivalent flight.

By the dinner break, over 1,900 entries had been made and the only question left was whether it would get to 2,000 entries. It fell just short, ending up with a staggering 1,990 buy-ins.

A further 578 played in Day 1h, taking the total number of entries up to 5,047. With just one starting day left, the only record left is last year’s final total of 5,799. Last year, the final starting day had 849 entries and if that number is repeated today, a new overall attendance record will be set!

Kristian Kis Bags Day 1g Chip Lead

The biggest starting day saw 298 of the 1,990 players progress to Day 2. Hungarian Kristian Kis booked the chip lead, on 1,293,000, the second biggest stack so far from the first eight flights. He was on of just three chip millionaires who emerged from the day. In second place on the leaderboard is Victor Azanon, with 1,158,000, followed by Battista Locati on 1,012,000. All three received bonus prizes of €1,500 packages to the Spring 2026 BOM.

BOM Champion Zisis Tops Day 1h

The Battle of Malta’s greatest ever storyline just keeps on giving. Vasileios Zisis almost did the inconceivable this time last year, finishing one place away from going back-to-back, having won the 2024 Spring Edition Main Event.

He arrived in Malta a couple of days ago and cashed in the Mystery Siege yesterday. He played  in Day 1g, but failed to progress, so chanced his luck in the half-price Day 1h. Quite remarkably, he emerged from that skirmish as the chip leader, securing 1,194,000 for Day 2, one of the five biggest stacks of the BOM so far. He also ensured he will return in Spring next year, taking down the bonus package for posting the largest stack.

There were 578 entries in the flight, with one other player, Dennis Stemmler, bagging over 1m. Just 42 players made it into Day 2.

Paul Murphy Wins Mystery Siege of Malta

The €450 Mystery Siege of Malta was won by Paul Murphy, after a three-way deal with Srdjan Milicevic and Hans Werge. They left €5,000 to play for after the deal, but it didn’t take long to complete, with Murphy cashing for €48,200, including €16,000 in bounties. Third place finisher Hans Werge actually won the most, having taken more in bounties than Murphy, but did not secure the trophy.

Side Event Winners

The first side event of the day was the €300 NLH MAS, which finished with a three-way chop. Claus Spiekermann took the most in the deal (€5,980), which he made with Pavlos Benakis and Maciej Toma.

Adam Milewski won Saturday’s €330 PLO, which had 133 entries, generating a prize pool of €32,851.  Milewski took the title after defeating Jeraint “JJ” Hazan heads-up, scooping the first prize of €8,705. Both his prize money and the €5,920 won by Hazan were greater than the rather lowly €5,000 guarantee which was set for the event.

Vikram Digpal won the Dark Knight, defeating fellow Brit Michael Johnson heads-up to bank the first prize of €9,920. It was the biggest edition of the Dark Knight so far this week, with 315 entries.

Sunday’s Schedule at the Battle of Malta

There is just one more flight for the Main Event on Sunday, the early starting Day1i, which begins at 10am. It’s a full price flight, but runs on a turbo, clock, from which the top 15% will join the 736 who have already booked their seats into Day 2, which is scheduled to start at 8pm.

As well as being Day 2 of the Main Event, it’s also the first day of €300,000 guaranteed €1,100 High Roller, sponsored by Qui Gioco. Registration for this stays open until the second level of Day 2. There are also two satellite to the High Roller today, at 11am and 10pm.

Today’s non-Hold’em offering is Sviten, which begins at 5pm, with a €330 buy-in. There’s also another running of the €400 White Knight and Day 1 of the Shark Bay Eurorounders €300 Bounty.
