Battle Of Malta Intensifies on Day 3 of Main Event 4 Nov 11:09 by Jonathan Raab

It was another action packed day at Casino Malta and the Intercontinental Hotel in St Julian’s, as the third day of the Battle of Malta Main Event played down to the last five tables. With seven other tournaments taking place, there was a lot to choose from, with a variety of different formats on offer, at various different price points.

A new attendance record was set in the High Roller, which climbed to over 700 entries, forcing a third day to be added for the tournament to reach its conclusion. The ACR Ladies event was also the biggest one seen at the Battle of Malta, with 158 entrants.

There were also huge fields for some of the side events, with over 600 entries in both the Novibet and Shark Bay EuroRounders tournaments.

Thirty-Nine Steps From Glory

Only 39 contenders for the Battle of Malta Main Event title remain after the 3rd day of the record breaking tournament. Ioannis Daskalis from Greece booked the chip lead with an impressive 15.95m, over 5m ahead of second placed Mikel Calo on 10.7m.

Gabriele Re, the only former winner of the Battle of Malta Main Event sits in 3rd place on 10.7m and only one other player, Dalibor Dula, bagged a stack of over 10m.

Angelos Michael took the chip lead into Day 3, but he busted before the first break of the day, to reshape the leaderboard. Another player who went into the day with a big stack, Herli Orlop, also saw his tilt at the title cut down, busting in 58th place, towards the end of the day.

Northern Irishman Darren Harbinson was sadly taken ill during the evening session. He had over 5m chips when he had to abandon play for the day, which was whittled down to 2.67m by the time the day ended. We hope he recovers in time to retake his seat in Day 4.

High Roller Goes into Third Day

The biggest high roller event that has ever been held at the Battle of Malta has been extended into an unscheduled fourth day. A further 325 players entered on Day 2, taking the total field up to 714, generating a prize pool of €678,300.

By the time play was suspended, 24 players remained in the field, all in with a shot at the first prize of €127,950. Italian Luigi D’Alterio has the chip lead on just over 3.5m.

Super High Roller Commences

The ACR Poker sponsored €2,200 Super High Roller had its first day on Monday, in which 55 players took their seats and eight levels were played. There’s a further three levels for more players to join the tournament when it restarts at 3pm. Both Rene Nezhoda and Casey Lloyd played this, but only Casey was among the 39 who bagged a stack for Day 2. Rene may well fire again, we shall see.

The overnight chip leader is Wang Yuhan from China, who more than tripled his starting stack of 50,000. Alex Todd, the 2023 Grosvenor Goliath champion is also still in, as is rising star Andreas Mavromoustakis from Cyprus.

Ladies Smash It Out of the Park

By far the biggest Ladies Event ever held at the Battle of Malta was won by Neena Patel after a three-way even chop with Melanie McHale and Fiorinda Sena. They each took €3,340 with the British player taking the trophy. A total of 158 ladies entered the ACR Poker sponsored tournament, including host Casey Lloyd, of Storage Wars fame, although she busted early and jumped into the Super High Roller.

Defending champion Flavia Guedes also took her  seat for this one, but only made it to the half-way point of the tournament. Maili Tannbaum, who was runner up at the last edition sneaked into the prize money, as did Ebony Kennedy.

Ladies Event Final Table

Three-Way Chop in Shark Bay EuroRounders Bounty

A further 95 players joined on the second and final day of the €300 Shark Bay EuroRounders Bounty for a total field of 649 entries, for a prize pool of almost €63k, not including bounties. After Jeff Sluzinski had been Boski’d out in 4th place, the remaining three did a deal. The tournament was won by Belgian Johan de Clerq, taking down €9,210 plus the trophy.

Side Event Roundup

Three other events were completed on Tuesday at the Battle of Malta, all with massive fields.

  • The Novibet Ultradeep PKO, with 622 entries ended in an even 7-way chop, with all taking €9,925, with German Nico Benz taking the trophy and the extra €10 that was symbolically set aside for the winner.
  • The Qui Goico €200 NLH had 315 entries and also resulted in a six-way deal, but this wasn’t an even chop. The players in positions 2-6 all took €4,000, but winner Edward Oakes from the UK, took more than double that, €8,280.
  • Italian Manuel Persico won the final €330 Pot Limit Omaha of the week, defeating a field of 107 runners to trouser the €7,615 first prize.

Congratulations to all!

The full results of these and all other events at the Autumn Edition can be found in the results section.

Ioannis Daskalis Leads Final 39 in Main Event 3 Nov 23:53 by Christoffer

Level 28: 60,000/120,000 (120,000)
Entries: 39/6,039
Prize Pool: €2,728,970

The last hand I was able to cover today played out at Table. UTG, Nico Diperna spent a considerable amount of time in the tank. Eventually he was called the clock on, and as the timer approached five seconds, he mucked his hand.

The next to act was Giovanni Capuan, who also contemplated his decision for a good three minutes. With five seconds left on his 30-second countdown clock, he moved all in for 1,395,000.

The action was now on Jorge Rebolleda, who – you guessed it – went in the tank. Realising the fun side of things, Rebolleda called the clock on himself, and eventually, he mucked. The rest of the table folded their respective hand swiftly, and that concluded play for the day. Being a good sport, Capuan revealed his KK holdings.

That’s a wrap for today’s live coverage: thanks to everyone who’s been tuning into the blog today. My eminent colleague Jonathan Raab will publish the chip counts as soon as possible. However, it can already be revealed Ioannis Daskalis is the chip leader with 15,950,000.

We’ll be back tomorrow shortly before 14:00 for the much-anticipated Day 4.

No Fish Today 3 Nov 23:31 by Christoffer

Level 28: 60,000/120,000 (120,000)
Entries: 40/6,039
Prize Pool: €2,728,970

Veljko Glavicic opened to 375,000; quite the hefty raise, one must admit. Gary Fisher was up for the task, though, as he called from the Button.

Both players checked the 35K flop. Glavicic checked again on the 8 turn, and without too much hesitation, Fisher forced his opponent all in for 1,430,000. Glavicic called as fast as humanly possible.

Gary Fisher: 99
Veljko Glavicic: KK

This live reporter didn’t put the players on these who particular hands. Obviously, the T river didn’t change anything, and as Glavicic doubled up, Fisher survived with crumbs.

Giuseppe Loses Some to Gompers 3 Nov 23:02 by Christoffer

Level 28: 60,000/120,000 (120,000)
Entries: 41/6,039

Jan Gompers fancied an open to 250,000 from the Lo-jack. He got one caller in form of Roberto Di Giuseppe (Big Blind).

Giuseppe donk-bet 225,000 on the 5T8 flop. Gompers sent a “Don’t mess with me”-message with a rather swift raise to 625,000. Giuseppe considered his options for perhaps 30 seconds before making the call.

Giuseppe slowed down and checked the A turn. Gompers continued the aggressive path with a 575,000 bet, and Giuseppe committed to the call. Yet another check from Giuseppe on the J river, before Gompers put in fourteen orange chips, which translated to 1,400,000. At this point, Giuseppe had enough, and he threw his hand into the muck.

Jan Gompers: 6,150,000
Roberto Di Giuseppe: 3,950,000

High Roller Bubble Bursts 3 Nov 23:02 by Jonathan Raab

The High Roller did reach the bubble during the first level after the dinner break, with just a few minutes left in level 20.

Defending a raise from Leon Worthington-Leese from mid-position, Andre Scerri Moved all-in on a flop of 78T and was called. He turned over 65 for an open ended straight draw and found himself up against TT. But the K didn’t help and nor did the 3 on the river to the rail, providing much relief for the other 111, who have all made it into the money.

This is what they’re playing for:

Mavromoustakis in the Super HR 3 Nov 22:42 by Jonathan Raab

A few more players from the ACR Poker Super High Roller that have impressive profiles. A Cypriot Andreas Mavromoustakis is also taking part. I recently reviewed an interview that Andreas gave on The Chip Race Podcast, speaking to Dara O’Kearney and David Lappin. Its an interesting listen, but if you wan’t the cliffs, check out my review on Poker Pro.

Alex Todd, Goliath winner 2023 is playing this one and the Storage Wars couple are still in too. The number of entrants has now risen to 36 and nobody has been eliminated yet.

Andro Scarpa opened to 240,000 from the Lo-jack. Seated right next to him, Emmanouil Chalkiotis put in a three-bet to 625,000 from the Hi-jack. Action folded back to Scarpa, who put in a four-bet. The amount looked to be 1,500,000, but before I was able to double-check the count, Chalkiotis had already folded. As the dealer pushed the chips the way of Scarpa, he revealed the 3 as one of his holdings. Chalkiotis shared a nod of approval to his opponent.

Asiil Maye: 66
Davis Modans: AT

Maye was slightly ahead with the pocket pair, but Modans took the lead on the QA9 flop. He never looked back as the board completed with 88, and Maye was sent to the rail in forty-ninth place for €5,550.

Daskalis Picks up Kings 3 Nov 22:08 by Christoffer

Seated in the Hi-jack, Enea Subashi open-shoved for 1,290,000. Ioannis Daskalis made the call from the Button, and the two players eventually went to showdown.

Enea Subashi: AQ
Ioannis Daskalis: KK

I’ve seen several pocket kings versus ace-x confrontations today, and from what I can remember, the cowboys have always held up. This time was no exception, as the board spelled out 58Q94. As such, Subashi’s tournament life came to an end in fifty-second place for €5,550.

Luciak on Bad End of Set Over Set 3 Nov 21:50 by Christoffer

Level 27: 50,000/100,000 (100,000)
Entries: 56/6,039

Action folded to Emmanuel Fountoulakis, who opened to 225,000 from the Button. The only woman left in the field, Ambre Luciak, made the call from the Small Blind before Leonardo Romeo surrendered his Big Blind.

Luciak checked the 6Q9 flop, and Fountoulakis continued for 200,000. Luciak then completed a check-raise to 600,000, and Fountoulakis made the call.

Luciak decided to move all in on the T turn. Without any hesitation, Fountoulakis made the call.

Ambre Luciak: 99
Emmanouel Fountoulakis: TT

A brutal turn card for Luciak, who didn’t improve to quads on the 3 river. As such, the last woman standing in the Main Event was eliminated.

Emmanouel Fountoulakis: 9,400,000
Ambre Luciak: 0

High and Super High Roller News 3 Nov 21:47 by Jonathan Raab

Both the €1,100 High Roller and €2,200 High Roller are taking place today. The High Roller is on its dinner break now with 120 of the 714 players who started still in possession of stacks, some bigger than others, life isn’t fair. Vasileios Zisis is still in the mix and when they return, it will soon be bubble time, as 111 players will make the prize money.

It’s due to finish tonight, however it’s by far the biggest High Roller there has ever been at the BOM, a third day to complete it cannot be ruled out yet. There were 540 entries last year, 174 players less than there are now.

The Super High Roller, sponsored by ACR Poker is on its first break of the day, with all 25 of the players who have entered still in. Registration in this is possible until the end of level 10, which is three levels after the re-start on Day 2.

Rene Nezhoda and Casey Lloyd of Storage Wars fame are both playing in this today, as is Rasmus Lundstrom, who had a great BOM Spring Edition earlier this year.

I’ll Never be your Beast of Budden 3 Nov 19:49 by Christoffer

Level 26: 40,000/80,000 (80,000)
Entries: 63/6,039
Prize Pool: €2,728,970

Connor Budden opened to 160,000 from the Lo-jack. Nico Diperna made the call from the Hi-jack, before Cristian-Aurelian Trif moved all in for 1,750,000 from the Cut-off. Budden made the call, before Diperna quickly folded.

Last Woman Standing Still Seated 3 Nov 19:28 by Christoffer

Level 26: 40,000/80,000 (80,000)
Entries: 68/6,039
Prize pool: €2,728,970

The sole woman left in the field, Amber Luciak, moved all in for 565,000 from UTG+1. Seated right next to her in the Lo-jack, chip leader Candido Cappiello was the sole caller.

Amber Luciak: KQ
Candido Cappiello: AT

Cappiello was slightly ahead, but Luciak took the lead on the 797 flop. Cappiello didn’t catch up on the Q5 runout. He could afford the loss, and Luciak earned herself a crucial double-up.

Sadly, We Have a Cancellation 3 Nov 19:27 by Jonathan Raab

Tonight’s Poker Experience Tour Hyper Turbo will sadly now be experienced by anyone, as it has been cancelled. There’s almost 1,000 players seated across the events taking place right now and the Super High Roller is due to start at 8pm. The management would like to apologise to everyone for this regrettable, but unavoidable situation.

Re Makes Bold Prediction After Insane Pot 3 Nov 18:41 by Jonathan Raab

Level 25: 30,000/60,000 (60,000)
Entries: 78/6,039
Prize pool: €2,728,970

At this stage, the pots are becoming very crucial. My feeling is that I see a lot of three-bets pre-flop; players are trying to take down the pots with early aggression.

Candido Cappiello opened to 125,000 from UTG+1. Milan Vanek made the call from the Hi-jack, prior to Cristian-Aurelian Trif making it 475,000 to go from the Big Blind. Cappiello made the call, before Vanek decided to get out of the way.

Trif continued the aggression with a 400,000 continuation bet on the 4K7 flop. Cappiello wasn’t going anywhere, and his call prompted the A turn. Trif sized up to 950,000, and after two minutes in the tank, Cappiello made the call. The pot was now getting ridiculously big.

Trif decided to slow down on the T river. Cappiello put the pedal to the metal, as he forced Trif all in for 800,000. Trif relieved a heavy sigh, and as he leaned back in his chair, contemplating his decision, table mate Richard Essex exchanged a look with Ambre Luciak that screamed, ”What a sick pot.”

Eventually, Trif mucked his hand, and Cappiello – who’s got to be the chip leader at this point – added to his already impressive stack.

As I was writing up the finishing details of the hand, player Gabriele Re came up to me and said, ”When you write the article, make sure to mention that guy will win,” referring to Cappiello. ”He’s by far the best player in the field.” Time will tell if Re’s prediction is right or wrong.

Candido Cappiello: 9,400,000
Cristian-Aurelian Trif: 800,000

Requesting a Mulligan 3 Nov 18:27 by Jonathan Raab

Level 25: 30,000/60,000 (60,000)
Entries: 80/6,039
Prize pool: €2,728,970

Big-stacked Davis Modans fancied an open to 125,000 from the Hi-jack. Lee Mulligan decided to put in a 435,000 from the Big Blind. Modans inspected his opponent’s stack, and then decided to force Mulligan all in for an additional 1,300,000. Without any hesitation, Mulligan made the call.

Davis Modans: KQ
Lee Mulligan: QQ

Things were looking good for Mulligan, but the Poker Gods decided to grant Modans a miracle. The Latvian flopped a straight on TJ9, and the J5 runout didn’t help Mulligan catch up.

”Running good,” one of the other players at the table joked with Modans, as a disappointed Mulligan bid farewell. ”Not running good, running suspiciously good,” Modans answered, indicating he’s been on a rush for a while.

Seated UTG, Charalampos Siakaras opened to 130,000. Nico Diperna made it 405,000 from the Lo-jack, before Jakub Fiala moved all in for roughly 2,800,000 from the Hi-jack. Siakaras spent two minutes in the tank before mucking his hand, but Diperna made the call faster than the speed of lightning.

Jakub Fiala: AK
Nico Diperna: AA

What a dream spot for Diperna. The 82Q34 board didn’t bring any help to Fiala, who survived with crumbs.

Nico Diperna: 5,500,000
Charalampos Siakaras: 4,400,000

Chip Leaders in the Main Event 3 Nov 17:40 by Jonathan Raab

Posting this on behalf of Christoffer, who is having technology issues, as he now will explain:

I arrived to the tournament venue at 16:00, eager to join my colleague Jonathan Raab for the Day 3 coverage. Much to my displeasure, my computer decided not to be very cooperative today. After roughly 45 minutes worth of troubleshooting, I’ve now given up, and will do today’s coverage through my phone. It’s a bit more tedious, but we’ll manage. The Battle of Malta is all about the good vibes, and it takes more than some technical issues to bring the mood down.

My first order of business was identifying some of the biggest stacks in the room. If my calculations are correct, Candido Cappiello should be the current chip leader.

Ruggero Magri is the Chip Leader at the 1st Break 3 Nov 16:15 by Jonathan Raab

Level 24: 25,000/509,000 (50,000)
Entries: 116/6,039

Ruggero Magri was the chip leader from the starting days, taking 1.52m into Day 2. By the close of play yesterday, he had bumped it up to 2.5m and was in 9th place of the 196 who returned today. At the first break in play, he had retaken the chip lead, with 6.8m. There are several stack of around 4m or so, but nobody else have moved above the 5m mark. We’ll track down the other chip leaders shortly.

Play has now resumed and its been confirmed that there will actually be seven levels played today, which means it will be done by 11.30pm.

Overnight Chip Leader Out! 3 Nov 15:36 by Jonathan Raab

Angelos Michael’s carefully constructed chapel of chips has tumbled! The Cypriot returned as the massive chip leader, with over 4.75m chips, but has found the rail even before the first break of the day. We didn’t see what happened, or who the new owners are of his once towering pile, but we may get some clues at the break time, which is coming up in a few minutes time.

High Roller Resumes 3 Nov 14:09 by Jonathan Raab

Today’s €1,100 High Roller has just resumed, with over 100 players buying in before the start of play, taking the total number of entries so far over 500. It’s sure to get much bigger, as there are 3 x 30-minute levels plus the first break for more players to join. Last year the high roller had 540 entrants. How many will this one get?

Luca Tonarelli Among Early Casualties 3 Nov 13:42 by Jonathan Raab

Level 22: 15,000/30,000 (30,000)
Entries: 186/6,039

The clock has been running for 30-minutes now and there have already been over 20 casualties. Alkan Aydingoez was the first player to bust when play resumed. We have also lost Luca Tonarelli, who was the 8th place finisher in the Main Event at the Spring Edition. He went out in 181st place for €3,300. We didn’t manage to bring you all the exits that happened at the end of last night, but we’ll be catching up with that soon.

Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight! 3 Nov 13:22 by Jonathan Raab

Back in the 1970s and early 1980s this was the chant in the school playground when two kids started hitting each other. A crowd would form a circle and spur them on, until a janitor or teacher inevitably broke it up. These fights were sometimes quite fierce and blood was drawn on some occasions. But they were nothing compared to what we have witnessed here at the Battle of Malta, where much more blood has been shed and kill rate has sometimes matched that of a Rambo movie.

Play had now resumed for Day 3 of the Main Event where, with 196 poker warriors battling it out for a seat in Day 4 and a shot at the €254,070 first prize. The blinds begin at 15,000/30,000 with a big blind ante of 15,000 and they will play five x 75 minute levels today.

New Record Set in Battle of Malta Main Event 3 Nov 11:51 by Jonathan Raab

A new record was set at The Battle of Malta on Sunday 2nd November, 2025. By the time registration closed in the final turbo starting day of the €600 showpiece event, a further 992 players had joined, bringing the final total up to 6,039 entries. This represents an increase of 240 buy-ins on the 2024 Autumn Edition. The final prize pool stands at €2,728,270 with a first prize of over €250,000 awaiting the winner, who will be crowned on Wednesday.

A further 149 players from the final flight joined those who had already booked their seats in Day 2. In the evening Day 2 began, with 811 players taking their seats, all assured of a payout of at least €900. Their number included six former Battle of Malta champions, including Cosme Gomez Martinez, who won the Autumn edition in 2024. Also through, with the third biggest stack at the start of Day 2, was Vasileios Zisis, who Gomez Martinez defeated heads-up this time last year, when his Greek opponent fell just short of retaining the title he won in the Spring edition.

Defending champion Adrian Ziemichod also made it into Day 2, as did 2023 Champion Gabriele Re and Nicodemo Piccolo, the winner of the very first Battle of Malta in 2012. Dimitrios Anastasakis, the 2022 Autumn winner completed the line of of former champions looking to become the first double winner.

Overall it was another very busy day in the Eden Arena and Casino Malta, at the Intercontinental Hotel in St Julian’s. Hundreds of players were seated throughout the day, with many of the side events also bursting at the seams. Over 500 players entered the €300 Shark Bay EuroRounders Bounty and close to 400 took their seats in the €1,100 High Roller. Both of these events will grow further on Monday as registration in each remains open during the first three levels after the restart.

Six levels were played on Day 2 in the Main Event, with the clock increased to 60-minutes. As is always the case, the exits came thick and fast at the start of the day, which was preceded by a short memorial ceremony for the much loved dealer Gianni Bevitori, who died earlier this year. A chef, a musician and an all-round wonderful person who is very much missed by all. RIP Gianni.

Five Champions Eliminated, One Remains

Over a quarter of the field were eliminated in the first level of the day, including Nicodemo Piccolo. When he became the inaugural Champion in 2012, he outlasted a field of 349 players. He scooped €35,000 back then, which is less than the 7th place finisher will receive this year.

Three of the other former champions were also eliminated as the day progressed. Cosme Gomez Martinez found the rail later in the day, departing in 396th for €1,800. The next to go was defending champ Adrian Ziemichod, who finally succumbed in 305th, collecting €2,300 after nursing a below average stack for most of the day. Soon after, Dimitrios Anastasakis departed in 317th, collecting the same amount.

Vasileios Zisis went close to making it into Day 3, but was taken out in 226th place during the last level of the day. He cashed for €2,600 but also won a €1,500 package to the Spring 2026 edition, as a bonus for being the chip leader from his starting day.

The only former champion who made it into Day 3 is Gabriele Re, who ended the day 1.15m chips, in 65th place of the 196 who will return on Monday.

Side Event Winners

Only two tournaments were played out to a conclusion on Sunday. The second outing of the White Knight was much busier than its first iteration. Just shy of 200 players entered the €400 buy-in tournament, creating a prize pool in excess of over €60,000. It ended after a six-way even chop, that left a bit more for the top three to play for. Petros Taki from Cyprus took down the trophy and the €8,500 first prize. The Sviten had 60 entries and was won by Edvin Ujhazi for €5,000.

Full results of these events can be found in the results section of the blog.
