Finnish poker legend Patrik Antonius is hosting a special event at this year’s Battle of Malta – the Patrik Antonius Poker Challenge Pop-up Cup, sponsored by First Land of Poker (FLOP).
The €260 + €40 buy-in No Limit tournament (Event #15 on the BOM schedule) kicks off at 7pm on October 18 and will run over two days.
Antonius, who has won nearly $12 million at live poker tournaments and many more millions online, has been focusing in recent months on the launch of FLOP, a special new social media app created exclusively for poker players.
FLOP, which is free and available on both IOS and Android, is aimed at helping players engage and share their passion for the game as well as get real time information on poker rooms, cash games and events. FLOP representatives will be out in force at a special stand at Battle of Malta to provide more information and sign up players.
The PAPC Pop-Up Cup follows the highly successful debut for the Patrick Antonius Poker Challenge in Tallinn in April. The festival featured nearly 30 events and broke Estonian records for cash games and tournaments.
Antonius took up poker professionally 16 years ago after turning a $200 online deposit into $20,000 in just a few months. He has since become one of the biggest winners in online poker history and is ranked 62nd in the all-time money list for live tournaments. Antonius, who lives with his family in Monte Carlo, also holds the record for winning the biggest pot in online poker history in a 2009 cash game against Viktor ‘Isildur1’ Blom when he snagged $1,346,946 in one hand.
Antonius said: “I’m incredibly excited about hosting the PAPC Pop-Up Cup at Battle of Malta. I attended last year’s Battle of Malta and was blown away by the great atmosphere and huge number of players. I am also really looking forward to welcoming players for the Cup tournament as well as competing myself and representing FLOP in a live event. I haven’t got a Malta flag yet so I’m aiming to rectify that this year! FLOP is a huge project for us – it’s the first social media app aimed exclusively at poker players – and is part of my drive to connect players and help make poker more fun again.”
After last year’s spectacular success, this year’s Battle of Malta is set to be the biggest yet and a huge turnout is expected. The festival is being held in the stunning Eden Arena at the InterContinental Hotel from October 25-30.
Last year, Battle of Malta broke its own records with a staggering 3,816 entries, generating a €1,850,760 prize pool, nearly double the €1 million guarantee. With 13,000 tournament entries overall, the festival was by far the biggest poker event ever held in Malta and awarded nearly €2.56 million in prize money across 15 different tournaments.
