Day 1c

Day 1c of the 2024 Battle of Malta Spring Edition €600 Main Event, hosted by Casino Malta, was the busiest of them all, with 747 entries being made at the Eden Arena at Intercontinental Malta throughout the 12 levels of registration. Fifteen percent of the field would make it to Day 2 and secure a min-cash along the way, which meant that 112 contestants bagged and tagged their chips at the end of the grueling 15-and-a-half-hour day.

Among those who managed to do so is Dario Barone. Barone is the defending champion of the Spring Edition, winning the Main Event in 2023 for €156,500. He secured yet another cash by surviving the onslaught of Day 1c, but with 52,000 in his bag, he finds among the bottom of the chip counts and will have to put in some work on Day 2 to achieve back-to-back victories.

The same can not be said for chipleader Nicola Ciraolo, who ended the night with a monstrous 621,000 chips, larger than any stack on Day 1a or Day 1b. The Italian player has two final tables at Battle of Malta under his belt, with his largest-ever live cash of €10,000 stemming from a fourth place in a side event at BoM 2019, and will be looking for a third one in the Spring Edition Main Event. Ciraolo’s fellow countryman Itaco Voto finished second in chips with 581,000, while 2013 BoM side event winner Tomasz Olszewski from Poland completes the podium, ending up with 567,000 chips in his bag.

Meanwhile, those who still have not punched their ticket for Day 2 will have one last shot at 10 a.m. tomorrow, April 7. At that time the final flight kicks off, Day 1e. This turbo flight will know 20-minute levels and is expected to finish around 5 p.m., which is two hours before Day 2 begins. There will not be extensive live coverage of this flight, but full chip counts will be posted as always. Reporting will then resume at the start of Day 2, at 7 p.m. local time.

Massimo counted out a call but tanked for several minutes before finding a fold. Mastrosimone stood up in relief and tabled his 9♠9♣ for all to see.

His crazy bluff near the end of Day 1c paid its dividend as he chipped up to a big stack stack before bubble play.

The final side event to get underway on this busy Saturday at the Battle of Malta is the €220 Dark Knight, a turbo structured event, which runs on a 20-minute clock and gives players a 20,000 starting stack. This tournament is one of the favourites at the Battle of Malta and is scheduled on several nights during the week. The first outing for the Dark Knight during the Spring Edition was on Thursday evening and there are two further runnings scheduled for Sunday and Tuesday evenings.

Although this is billed as the Battle of Malta Spring Edition, it could easily pass as a summer edition, which has arrived early at the jewel in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea that Malta is. Its great walking weather to take in some of the sights and there’s a nature reserve at Pembroke, which is within a 10 minute stroll of the casino, for those looking for some fresh air in between sessions at the poker tables.

Friday April 5th at the 2024 Battle of Malta Spring Edition included these highlights:

• 358 players went to battle in the main event’s Day 1b, with 54 players progressing to Day 2, while over 300 poker souls were slain on the battlefield, some of which will rise again for another starting day, as there are five flights from which to navigate stack into Day 2.
• Three side events concluded, with three champions crowned in the €450 Mystery Siege of Malta, the €250 NLH BETiC Battle and the first of two €330 H.O.R.S.E events on the festival’s tournament schedule.

Christopher Grech is the Chipleader from Main Event Day 1b

It was local player Christopher Grech who bagged the biggest stack of the day, capturing the lead in dramatic style in the final hand of the day, when he eliminated an unfortunate Jianyi Lu, who four-bet all-in for 162,000 with A♠K♠ only to be called by Grech, holding Q♥Q♠. With no help from the board, Li became the 55th finisher and will have to re-enter if he wants to continue his quest for BOM glory.

54 of the 358 players who started Day 1b survived the battlefield and will join the 30 who made it through Day 1a. Combined with the 201 who entered on Day 1a, the total number of entries is now up to 519 after the first two flights and the guarantee is well on the way to being smashed in the €600 Main Event. With just 421 further players required, it is expected that the €500,000 guarantee will be surpassed during Saturday’s day 1c and the final total is likely to be way in excess of this.

Grech had been handily placed before the final hand took place but now takes a soaring lead into Day 2, which begins on Sunday evening. Jeremy Bametz finished with the second biggest stack of the day (463,000), closely followed by Dimitrios Anastasakis (459,000) and Leonidas Georgopoulos (453,000) with Patrick Pedersen (420,00) and Yuri Ishida (413,000) being the only other poker warriors to breach the 400,000 chip barrier.

Lampros Vlachos Wins the Mystery Siege of Malta (€15,920)

The Mystery Siege of Malta attracted a total of 448 entries across two starting days and generated prize pool of nearly €85,000 and the same again in bounties. There was nearly €16,000 for the winner, while the largest mystery bounty was worth €10,500. The biggest bounty was pulled quite early on in the day by Salvatore Caruso and as is traditional at the event, the drawing of the prize was done on the stage in theatrical style hosted by Battle of Malta event director Telly Bartolo and host Patrisha Rimfire.

Despite taking the biggest bounty of the day and another worth €1,500, Caruso was unable to progress to the later stages of the tournament, exiting in 27th place. After the excitement of the big bounty being drawn the focus for the remaining players became winning the event. Congratulations to Lampros Vlachos from Greece who wrestled the trophy from Italian Alessandro D’Amore after a short heads-up battle.

Mattia Ridi Wins the €250 BETiC Battle (€4,800)

The €250 BETiC Battle side event was won by Italian Mattia Ridi, who topped a field of 105 players to bank the €4,800 first prize. The final prizepool for the tournament was €21,945 and most of the players on the final were Italians, with a few local players also sneaking into the money.

Constantin Munteanu Wins €330 H.O.R.S.E (€2,870)

Medieval warfare usually involved horsemen and its fitting that this mixed game favourite is regular fixture at the Battle of Malta, with two such events scheduled. The first of these took place on Friday evening, when 24 cavaliers saddled up to joust for the €2,870 first prize. Only four were paid with Constantin Munteanu taking the title. Congratulations to Battle of Malta reporter Frank Visser who took 4th place for €820, jumping straight in after he finished his shift writing about the main event.

Cash games have been bustling so far this festival and Saturday’s action at the Battle of Malta is likely to be the busiest yet.

Alessandro Di Cesare was quickly three-bet to 1,300 by Tadas Stasiulis on his left after he raised 300 from under the gun. Ludek Safranek flatted from the small and Di Cesare folded.

Off to the 2♠4♠2♦ flop and Statiulis continued with a 1,500 bet, which Safranek called. The next card was 3♥ and Statiulis bet 4,500 after his opponent checked, and after some thought Safranek called again.

Both players checked the scary K♥ on the river and Safranek turned J♣J♥ his pocket jacks which couldn’t beat the Q♣Q♦ pocket queens of Stasiulis.

We went to check out how Daiva Byrne was getting on during the early moments and noticed a big early pot developing. Spoiler, despite already chipping up a little, Byrne wasn’t involved in the hand and was patiently watching how the action went down.

Giovanni De Gregorio bet 1,700 into a pot of around 5,000 with the K♦7♠T♥ on the flop. Rami Awad folded before Cosimo De Gennaro called. Giovanni Grecco then raised to 5,700. De Gregorio folded while De Gennaro found a call.

Grecco then fired out for 7,000 on the 5♣ turn. De Gennaro went into the tank before giving up on the pot for Grecco to take down an early pot.

Usually, that would be a split, but Cristiano had 9 outs to make a flush on the river as he had the A♠. Lucky for his opponent he didn’t hit any of those and both players chopped it up.

Both players are here primarily to support the €150 Ladies Event taking place on Sunday. For the first time, the Battle of Malta will be live-streaming the final table of the Ladies Event and we will try to have both of these poker heroes in the booth with us provided they are not playing in either Day 2 of the Main Event or at the final table themselves of the Ladies Event.

As both are well-accomplished players, we hope that we don’t see them in the booth as this means they are running deep. However, it is a win/win for poker fans as either they are running deep or entertaining the masses with some banter and hand analysis in the commentating booth.

With a board of 4♥T♠3♣ it was three-way on the turn 3♠ between Hans Erlandsson, and Matteo Tranchina who both checked, and Kjetil Hanstvedt who bet 1,600 into a pot of around 2,000 chips. That was followed by a re-raise from Tranchina from the small blind and a fold from Erlandsson who was the original raiser.

The river was 9♦ and Tranchina quickly tossed a 9,000 bet. Hastvedt quickly folded and showed 6♠5♠ that was straight and a flush draw on the turn.

Meanwhile, the turbo Day 1d kicks off at 8 p.m. with a faster 20-minute clock while tomorrow morning boasts the final opening flight with Day 1e kicking off at 10 a.m.

He is closely followed by Norway’s Vidar Oie who was the Day 1a chip leader after advancing with 556,000 in chips.
