Day 1b

Day 1B finished with 54 players in the money, who all bagged their chips for Day 2. The second flight of the BoM Main Event got 358 entries, 18 levels, and almost 15 hours of action between the players.

The bubble was played hand-for-hand and Lyanyi Lu was the unlucky player who bubbled against Christopher Grech who became the chip leader of Day 1B.

Christopher Grech managed to win the last hand of the day with his Queens against Lu’s AK for almost 400,000 chips and is the chip leader of Day 1B with a massive 554,000 stack, which falls short just 2,000 from the chip leader of Day 1A Vidar Oie.

Jianyi Lu was already getting involved in pots near the bubble and once again he raised from an early position to 18,000, Massimo Bruno called right behind him and Cristopher Grech spiced up the pot with a three-bet to 55,000. Jianyi Lu didn’t even wait for the player on the big blind to fold as he pushed his whole stack (162,000) forward and announced that he was all-in.

Bruno folded and Grech definitely took his time before making the call.

Lu needed some high cards on the flop but didn’t get them as the dealer turned 4♦2♦6♠. The next card didn’t help either – 4♣. Only an ace or a king would win the pot for Lu, but the river was J♠.

Jianyi Lu busted Day 1B in the 55th position and stood up from his chair with a smile.

Lithuania’s Daiva Byrne, also known as “Baltic Blonde” founded one of the most popular poker groups on Facebook in FLIP. What’s more impressive is that this large group is for women only, which makes tons of sense considering Byrne’s background in pushing ahead important initiatives for ladies throughout the many years she has been involved in poker.

Daiva Byrne was down to her last 6 blinds and shoved them from the cutoff with J♣9♣ and only Audrius Eidukynas called her with Q♦5♥ from the big blind.

The 6♥3♦8♣ flop didn’t include any of the cards she needed to beat a queen high. The 9♦ turn gave her the lead and the J♦ river secured her double-up.

A fun rail has developed as the final table approaches in the €450 Mystery Siege of Malta. This is not the same vibrant rail that takes place whenever a break occurs and mystery bounties are pulled but fun and friendly nonetheless.

We first ran into 2023 Battle of Malta Spring Edition Main Event champion Dario Barone, who was on the rail with both his wife and his cousin. Neither play poker but his cousin’s girlfriend and Barone’s friend Alessandro D’Amore battle it out with one of the bigger stacks in play.

Barone shared that he fired two bullets in the Main Event today after unsuccessfully firing a single bullet in Day 1b of the Mystery Siege of Malta that he is now railing.

Meanwhile, Matthew Micallef was another poker player on the rail. The formidable Maltese local player was watching closely the actions of his countrymate James Paris, who has been on absolute fire as of late with his names consistently in local headlines.

Con l’avvicinarsi del tavolo finale del Mystery Siege of Malta da €450 si è sviluppato un divertente rail. Non si tratta dello stesso rail vivace che si verifica ogni volta che si verifica una pausa e vengono estratti i mystery bounty, ma è comunque divertente e amichevole.

A rollercoaster of bets pre-flop happened at table number 7. Sokratis Papavramidis raised to 4,000 from an early position, on his left Gianluca Trebbi and Francisc Voidoc called and a re-raise followed by Johnsen Pedersen to 20,000.

Not long after a 45,000 four-bet was made by original raiser Papavramidis and wow – Trebbi five-bet all-in for 150,000.

Everyone folded and Gianluca Trebbi won a 73,000 pot preflop without even showing his cards.

Benakis hopes to survive with this bullet were crushed on the A♥K♠7♣ flop after Mussumarra hit another king. No miracles happened on the next two cards and Mussumarra won the pot.

Salvatore Caruso was the early star of the €450 Mystery Siege of Malta as during the break he chose the top €10,500 mystery bounty prize during the first of his two mystery bounty pulls.

This was not all, as Caruso also won a €1,500 mystery bounty straight after for €12,000 in mystery bounties thus far.

Meanwhile, the event is down to just 24 players, each locking up €560 with much more on the line with more bounties to be pulled and a €15,920 top prize on the line.

Udo Hemmert had the chip lead on the break and was the only chip millionaire with blinds at 10,000/20,000 along with a 20,000 big blind ante.

Sanz was correct, his opponent didn’t have anything, but his “air” was better than his as Dahl turned A♥Q♣. The river J♥ completed the nut straight for Dahl, which meant a nice double-up for him.

The 3♦ river then rolled off and Prinari took some time before slamming in 29,000 chips. Perna thought long and hard until ultimately the clock was called on him. At the end of his countdown, his hand was declared dead and Prinari took down the pot.

An interesting hand was played after Yuri Ishida raised the pot and got re-raised by Marc Sanz on her left, 6 players behind folded, and Ishida called.

With 15,000 already in the middle Ishida checked-raised 7♦Q♦5♣ flop to 11,000 after her opponent bet 3,600 and then called the raise. The turn was another Q♣ queen and there were two flush draws on the board, a big 16,000 bet followed by Ishida and Sanz called again.

The river 2♣ completed the second flush draw but didn’t seem to change anything. Yuri Ishida put forward her stack and announced all-in for 61,300. Five minutes into the tank Marc Sanz made the call and both players showed.

The 2023 Battle of Malta Main Event champion Dario Barone arrived last night and was in the Day 1b field of the €450 Mystery Siege of Malta.

That didn’t work out well for the friendly Italian poker beast, so he opted to hop into the Main Event.

“I fired several times into the Main Event in October,” shared Barone earlier today. “I only fired once during the final turbo flight the event I won.”

Barone is off to a hot start and perhaps setting a new pattern as he was sitting on around a double a starting stack with approximately 60,000 in chips in his stack.

“Did you double through anyone?” we asked Barone.

“No, I have been slowly chipping up,” Barone shared.

We wish our BoM hero the best of luck in his quest to become the first two-time Battle of Malta Main Event champ. We also will keep our fingers crossed that he can advance to Day 2 with a single bullet on Day 1b.

La cosa non ha funzionato bene per la simpatica bestia da poker italiana, così ha optato per partecipare al Main Event.

“Ho sparato diverse volte nel Main Event di ottobre”, ha detto Barone oggi. “Ho sparato solo una volta durante il turbo flight finale dell’evento che ho vinto”.

Barone è partito alla grande e forse sta definendo un nuovo modello, visto che era seduto su uno stack di partenza circa doppio, con circa 60.000 fiches nel suo stack.

“Hai raddoppiato qualcuno?”, abbiamo chiesto a Barone.

“No, ho fatto lentamente chipping”, ha risposto Barone.

Auguriamo al nostro eroe del BoM la migliore fortuna nel suo tentativo di diventare il primo due volte campione del Main Event del Battle of Malta. Incrociamo anche le dita affinché possa avanzare al Day 2 con un solo bullet nel Day 1b.

Lithuania’s Daiva Byrne, also known as “Baltic Blonde” is in the house and already in action on Day 1b of the €600 Main Event with a little more than a starting stack.

She traveled to Malta with her husband John to host the €150 FLIP Ladies Event on Sunday. She shared that she will try to bag a stack for Day 2 of the Main Event today while John is “busy” soaking in the rays at the rooftop pool.

Byrne was the founder of one of the most popular poker groups on Facebook in FLIP. What’s more impressive is that this large group is for women only, which makes tons of sense considering Byrne’s background in pushing ahead important initiatives for ladies throughout the many years she has been involved in poker.

For the first time, the Ladies Event will have its final table live-streamed. While, this author, Jason Glatzer, will be the main commentator for both that table and the final table of the Main Event a few days later, I asked Byrne whether she would join me in the booth.

“I’d be happy to join the comms if I am not still either in the Main Event or on the Ladies Event final table,” said Byrne with a smile.

While we would love to have Byrne join us to commentate on the Ladies Event final table, we hope that she won’t as this will mean she has busted both events. Rest assured, if Byrne does go deep in either event, we will certainly do our best to have at least one lady join in as a guest commentator until a winner is crowned on Sunday evening.

His big slick proved to be no good against a pocket pair to hit the rail during hand-for-hand play at the end of Day 1a of the 2024 Battle of Malta Spring Edition Main Event when players were playing down to 15 percent of the field.

The returning players all made the money, but Stasiulis at least got a freeroll despite missing out on advancing to Day 2 through Day 1a thanks to the bubble protection provided by PokerHopper.com.

The 2024 Battle of Malta Spring Edition is off to a scorching start at the Eden Arena located at the luxurious Intercontinental Hotel and at the Casino Malta. Thursday witnessed not only the start of the Main Event but also three side event winners. The crown jewel of the Battle of Malta in the €600 Main Event is well on its way to crushing its guarantee with 201 entries already in the mix on the first of five opening days. It is expected that both today’s Day 1b and tomorrow’s Day 1c will decimate these figures for what promises to be a monstrous prize pool in the 2024 Battle of Malta Main Event.

After more than 14 hours of play, just 30 players bagged up stacks already in the money for Sunday’s Day 2.

Norway’s Vidar Oie was the star of the day after transforming his 30,000 opening stack into a whopping stack of 556,000 in chips. While no other player bagged more than 500,000 or even 400,000 several players advanced from Day 1a with at least 300,000 in chips including Michal Janczarski (389,000), Luke Pace (343,000), Marko Luksa (331,000), and Toni Ravnak (307,000).

Fouad Bjaoui Wins the €150 Enjoy and Win (€3,220)

We interviewed Carina Voncken during the event and she parlayed her decent stack near the money bubble to a runner-up performance worth €2,210. However, it was Fouad Bjaoui who was the first star of the day after defeating Voncken heads-up to win the title.

Ville-Oskari Turja Wins the €330 PLO 4 Card (€4,100)

The €330 PLO 4 Card attracted an enthusiastic field of 39 entries for a €11,100 prize pool with the top five players guaranteed at least a €1,060 payout for more than triple the buy-in.

It took slightly more than nine hours before Ville-Oskari Turja defeated Mikka Mustonen heads-up to win the €4,100 top prize with Dwayne Sluis, Kaloyan Kirov, and the formidable Marcin Puczylowski all cashing in the event after Gaspar Perasovic bubbled the tournament.

Timothy Chung Wins the €220 Dark Knight (€3,660)

The €220 Dark Knight was the final tournament to crown a champion on Thursday evening. It was actually early Friday morning when Timothy Chung defeated Hongxiang Li heads-up to win the €3,660 top prize after nearly seven hours of play.

Marc Hunter, Florian Ahlmer, Andrea Atzeni, Emmanouil Chalkiotis, Eleftherios Eleftherakis, Max Gerritsen, and Marco Leonzio all found their way to the payout desk.

The event attracted 90 entries to create a €13,300 prize pool.

Meanwhile, the €450 Mystery Siege of Malta attracted 178 entries on Day 1a with 27 players advancing into Friday’s Day 2. Friday will also feature Day 1b with cards in the air at Noon. Ivars Bareika advanced with the chip lead with David Lappin in the middle of the pack.

Daniele Puccio raised to 200 from the cutoff, which was called by Fernando Amorelli on the button. Marcelo Bona also came along from the small blind before Ignas Navickas three-bet to 1,500 from the big blind.

Puccio threw in a call while the other two players got out of the way. On the subsequent 2♥J♥7♦ flop, Navickas continued for 1,300, and this was enough to let Puccio throw away his cards and forfeit the pot.

After another exciting ceremonious opening of the day, the “shuffle up and deal” echoed through the room with 79 players on the clock.

The sun has risen once more as a new day emerges on the Mediterranean island of Malta. And, this time of year, a new day means a new starting flight for the 2024 Battle of Malta Spring Edition Main event, with Day 1b, the second of five, being on the cards at 1 p.m. local time. The €600 buy-in tournament boasts a massive €500,000 guaranteed prize pool and will be the main focus of the coverage today, but as always there will be plenty of side events to enjoy as well at the Eden Arena at the Intercontinental Malta.

Two more satellites will feed players into the Main Event for as low as €70, the €450 Mystery Bounty will begin its second starting flight in the afternoon and conclude in the evening, and a H.O.R.S.E. tournament will take place in the evening for those who love to play with more than two cards. Of course, for those who desire instant gratification, cash games will run at Casino Malta.

Yesterday, Day 1a of the Main Event set the first steps to reaching that guaranteed prize pool as 201 entries were made. Every starting flight plays down to 15 percent of the field, meaning that 30 players bagged and tagged at roughly 3 a.m., all of them being in the money.

Topping the charts was Norway’s Vidar Oie, who was the only player to bag more than half a million chips, ending up with 556,000 of them. Following by quite a distance was Michal Janczarski from Poland with 389,000 chips, while Australian Luke Pace completed the podium with a stack of 343,000.

The goal has been set for players who register for Day 1b today. They will want to increase their starting stack of 30,000 to more than half a million chips if they want to contest Oie’s chip lead. Luckily for them, they will have plenty of room to do so as the blinds will start at 100/100 and levels will last for 40 minutes each. A 20-minute break will be had after every three of them, while a 75-minute dinner break is scheduled after Level 9, around 7:40 p.m. local time.

Late registration will remain open for 12 levels, during which new players can enter and existing entries can reenter as many times as they please. Like all starting flights, Day 1b will play down to 15 percent of the field, at which point all remaining players will be in the money and end the night by putting their chips inside of the coveted bags. They will then return on April 7 at 7 p.m. local time for Day 2.

Ieri, il Day 1a del Main Event ha segnato i primi passi verso il raggiungimento del montepremi garantito, con 201 iscrizioni. Ogni flight di partenza gioca fino al 15% del field, il che significa che 30 giocatori hanno imbustato ed etichettato alle 3 del mattino circa, tutti in the money.

In cima alla classifica c’era il norvegese Vidar Oie, che è stato l’unico giocatore a imbustare più di mezzo milione di fiches, finendo con 556.000 fiches. Segue a grande distanza il polacco Michal Janczarski con 389.000 chip, mentre l’australiano Luke Pace completa il podio con uno stack di 343.000.

L’obiettivo è stato fissato per i giocatori che si registrano al Day 1b di oggi. Vorranno aumentare il loro stack iniziale di 30.000 a più di mezzo milione di chip se vogliono contestare il vantaggio di Oie. Fortunatamente per loro, avranno molto spazio per farlo, poiché i bui inizieranno a 100/100 e i livelli dureranno 40 minuti ciascuno. Dopo ogni tre livelli è prevista una pausa di 20 minuti, mentre la pausa cena di 75 minuti è prevista dopo il livello 9, intorno alle 19:40 ora locale.

La registrazione tardiva rimarrà aperta per 12 livelli, durante i quali i nuovi giocatori potranno iscriversi e quelli già iscritti potranno rientrare tutte le volte che vorranno. Come tutti i voli iniziali, il Day 1b sarà giocato fino al 15% del field, a quel punto tutti i giocatori rimanenti saranno in the money e termineranno la serata mettendo le loro chip all’interno delle ambite borse. Torneranno poi il 7 aprile alle 19.00 ora locale per il Giorno 2.
