Day 3

Day 3 of the €600 Battle of Malta Spring Edition Main Event, hosted by Casino Malta, saw 101 players return to the Eden Arena at Intercontinental Malta, out of the 1,814 total entries. They had all locked up €2,300 already but had to survive the day to have a chance at the lion’s share of the €913,349 prize pool, with all eyes fixed on the grand prize of €100,000.

The plan was to play down to 24 players or play six full levels, and it would be the former that happened first. Among those who advanced to Day 4 is the only Battle of Malta champion remaining, 2022 Spring Edition winner Giuseppe Rosa. The Italian player bagged 3,575,000 chips, good for 89 blinds when Day 4 kicks off.

His heap of chips was not big enough to take the lead, however, as that honor was bestowed upon Estonian player Rasmus Sepping. Sepping took the chiplead early on Day 3 when he over-bet his nut straight on the river and was called by two pair. Since then, he has not looked back and kept it throughout the very end of the day, resulting in a stack of 4,880,000 chips, a massive 122 big blinds at the start of Day 4. Sweden’s Erik Lindqwist and start-of-Day 3 chip leader Vasileios Zisis, meanwhile, are tied for second place with 3,650,000 chips.

Also in the top ten are Serbian Marko Luksa (3,125,000), who got 11th at BoM Autumn Edition 2023, and Swiss grinder Nico Frenn (2,675,000).

Others advancing to Day 4 include Polish regular Michal Janczarski (2,170,000), the last player from another continent Mehdi Rebai (1,650,000), the Greek duo of Fotos Ntamaris (1,525,000) and Dimitrios Gkatzas (1,335,000), and absolute short stack Modestas Kryzanauskas (260,000), who is the last Lithuanian standing after they have invaded the island of Malta for BoM.

Of course, 77 players had to say their goodbyes on Day 3, and among the fallen were the last lady Yuri Ishida from Japan (59th – €3,500), serial deep runner Antoine Talvard (32nd – €4,200), and final Maltese standing Luke Pace (29th – €4,930).

Eventually, with 25 players left, Sebastien Vincendeau got his underpair in against top set to bubble the final three tables and thus bring Day 3 to completion. The 24 remaining players will return for Day 4 on April 9 at 1 p.m. local time. They will restart in Level 26: 20,000/40,000 with a 40,000 big blind ante, with 43 minutes left on the clock.

Day 4 will see the field be brought down to a final table of eight players before they bag and tag for the live-streamed final day. Il terzo giorno del Main Event del Battle of Malta Spring Edition da 600 euro, ospitato da Casino Malta, ha visto 101 giocatori tornare all’Eden Arena dell’Intercontinental Malta, sui 1.814 iscritti totali. Tutti avevano già incassato 2.300 euro, ma dovevano sopravvivere alla giornata per avere la possibilità di fare la parte del leone nel montepremi di 913.349 euro, con tutti gli occhi puntati sul primo premio di 100.000 euro.

Il piano prevedeva di giocare fino a 24 giocatori o di giocare sei livelli completi, e sarebbe stata la prima soluzione. Tra coloro che sono passati al Day 4 c’è l’unico campione del Battle of Malta rimasto, il vincitore della Spring Edition del 2022 Giuseppe Rosa. Il giocatore italiano ha imbustato 3.575.000 fiches, buone per 89 blinds quando il Day 4 prenderà il via.

Tuttavia, il suo mucchio di chip non è stato abbastanza grande per prendere il comando, poiché tale onore è stato conferito al giocatore estone Rasmus Sepping. Sebastien Vincendeau raised to 80,000 from the hijack and was called by Kristian Dahl in the cutoff. Stefano Munafo also came along in the big blind and a flop of 9♣7♠3♠ was dealt. Vincendeau continued for 120,000, which got rid of Dahl. Munafo, however, check-raised to 375,000.

VIncendeau then quickly moved all-in and Munafo snap-called with his 1,160,000 chips.

Munafo had Vincendeau almost drawing dead, but the Frenchman turned some outs with the J♦, but his gutshot did not come in on the 5♠ river. After counting all the chips, it turned out that VIncendeau had 10,000 chips left.

He tossed those in from under the gun the next hand and was isolated by Giuseppe Rosa in the cutoff.

The €250 IPF (Italian Poker Federation) side event has recently started. So far there are 50 players and they have just started level two. There are ten levels for late registration. Already spotted in the field is Emma “Emzy” Oliver, who finished 5th in last night’s FLIP Ladies event. She would have been disappointed not to notch up her third BOM Ladies title, but must be pleased to have at least made it deep enough to keep that dream alive for so long.

Stefano Munafo raised to 80,000 on the button and Sebastien Vincendeau defended the big blind. He then check-called Munafo’s 60,000 bet on the K♥2♦T♠ flop before both players checked on the 8♠ turn.

Vincendeau made a bet of 100,000 on the 2♥ river and was quickly called by Munafo. Vincendeau shook his head and tabled K♣5♣, but it was good enough to get the full pot as Munafo’s cards hit the muck.

The big chip leader at the second break of day was Rasmus Sepping, who with 5.2m chips, was almost 1.5m ahead of his nearest challenger, Vasileios Zisis, who had 3.75m. I managed to catch up with Rasmus during the break to find out a little bit more about the Estonian national.

Rasmus was 20-years-old when he moved from Estonia to Australia, intending to spend just a year there, but somehow managed to stay for nine years. During his time in Oz he continued to pursue his love of poker, initially just as a hobby, but seven years ago he went full-time and became a pro. He returned to live in Estonia just after Covid. Initially he played a lot of cash games but now focuses mainly on tournaments, playing a mixture of online and live poker at Olympic Casino in the Estonian capital Tallinn.

His presence at the Battle of Malta was not intentional, he is on holiday here with his girlfriend and their 5-month-old baby daughter and decided by chance to come and play the event. He’s now locked up at least €4,930, but has his eyes firmly on a seat at the final table and shot at the €100,000 first prize.

Sono riuscito a incontrare Rasmus durante la pausa per scoprire qualcosa di più sul cittadino estone.
Rasmus aveva 20 anni quando si è trasferito dall’Estonia all’Australia, con l’intenzione di trascorrervi solo un anno, ma in qualche modo è riuscito a rimanere per nove anni. Only 30 players remain in the BoM Main Event, and they have been sent on their second and final 25-minute break of the day.

When they return, they will play two more 75-minute levels or down to 24 players, whichever comes first.

Comunque vada per il francese Antoine Talvard si tratta dell’ennesima deep run al Battle Of Malta anche se vuole migliorare la 18esima posizione di giugno 2023 quando vinse 5,430 euro quando vinse Dario Barone: “Vivo a Malta per quello ho tanti risultati qui sull’isola. Mi sono trasferito qualche anno fa per giocare online e per vivere di poker. Gioco frequentemente su Winamax, ovviamente anche PokerStars e pure su GGPoker.”
Ha appena raddoppiato quando lo intervistiamo velocemente al tavolo: “Stavolta è durissima e vorrei andare più avanti possibile. Finora il mio miglior risultato qui è sempre in questa Arena ma nel Summer Poker Festival di giugno 2023, poco dopo la deep run al Battle.” Quell’evento totalizzò 508 entries con il successo di Simone Andrian e l’ottavo posto di Eros Nastasi e il nono di Marco Regonaschi. A quel tavolo c’era anche il greco Fotios Ntamaris che abbiamo intervistato sempre su queste pagine e protagonista in questa Spring Edition.
Ora viaggia a 400mila chips sotto average.
Ha vinto 71mila dollari in carriera ed è il quarto cash centrato al Main Event oltre ad altri piazzamenti riscossi in tutti i side event.
Ottimo player sia online che live molto aggressivo e davvero capace di stravolgere il volto di un torneo.

Whatever happens for the Frenchman Antoine Talvard it is yet another deep run at the Battle Of Malta even if he wants to improve on the 18th position of June 2023 when he won 5,430 euros when Dario Barone won: “I live in Malta that’s why I have many results here on the island . I moved a few years ago to play online and make a living from poker. I play frequently on Winamax, obviously also PokerStars and also on GGPoker.”

He has just doubled when we quickly interview him at the table: “This time it’s very hard and I’d like to go as far as possible. So far my best result here is still in this Arena but in the Summer Poker Festival in June 2023, shortly after the deep run at Battle.” That event totaled 508 entries with the success of Simone Andrian and the eighth place of Eros Nastasi and the ninth of Marco Regonaschi. At that table there was also the Greek Fotios Ntamaris who we have always interviewed on these pages and who is the protagonist in this Spring Edition.

He is now traveling 400 thousand chips below average.

He has won 71 thousand dollars in his career and is the fourth cash winner in the Main Event as well as other placings in all the side events.

Excellent player both online and live, very aggressive and truly capable of changing the face of a tournament.

Antonino Calabro opened from the middle position, on his left Alessio Mastrosimone flatted the 85,000 raise, and once again aggressive action by Vasileios Zisis who three-bet to 375,000. Calabro picked a bunch of orange chips and it looked like he was going to re-raise for a moment, but ended up just calling.

With Mastrosimone out of the way both players were heads-up on 7♥7♣A♣ flop which they both checked. The same thing happened on the 9♠ turn. The 3♥ river got some action as Zisis made a 350,000 bet which his opponent called. Zisis had A♠Q♦ top pair aces and Calabro showed his pocket queens Q♥Q♣.

This was one of the last hands of Level 25 right before the break. Zisis scoops another pot worth nearly 2 million chips.

Antonino Calabro ha aperto dalla posizione centrale, alla sua sinistra Alessio Mastrosimone ha flattato il rilancio di 85.000, e ancora una volta l’azione aggressiva di Vasileios Zisis che ha fatto una three-bet a 375.000. Calabro ha raccolto un mucchio di fiches arancioni e per un attimo sembrava che stesse per rilanciare, ma ha finito per chiamare.

Con Mastrosimone fuori dai giochi, entrambi i giocatori si sono trovati in heads-up sul flop 7♥7♣A♣ che entrambi hanno checkato. La stessa cosa è accaduta sul turn 9♠. Il river 3♥ è stato oggetto di azione: Zisis ha fatto una puntata di 350.000 che il suo avversario ha chiamato. Zisis aveva A♠Q♦ top pair di assi e Calabro mostrò le sue regine pocket Q♥Q♣.

Questa è stata una delle ultime mani del livello 25 prima della pausa. Zisis si aggiudica un altro piatto da quasi 2 milioni di chip.

Today’s non-Hold’em event is a €330 Knockout (non-progressive bounty) and it has just kicked-off, with 17 players joining within a few minutes of the start. Amongst the early entrants are Finnish player Samuel Newsome, who won Saturday’s Dark Knight II. There are eight 25 minute levels before late registration closes.

There are 10 minutes left on Level 25 and the next two levels will be Level 26 with blinds at 20,000/40,000 and Level 27 with blinds at 25,00/50,000.

Daniel Maunders opened the pot by raising it up to 60,000, a three-bet followed by Kristian Dahl to 180,000, and an all-in by Nikolaou Spidridon sitting on the small blind for another 600,000. Maunders folded and Dahl quickly put in the call.

Spidridon was ahead, but the 2♥6♥A♠ flop helped his opponent a bit with a flush draw. Spidridon started saying “no heart, no heart” as soon as he saw the flop, and indeed no heart came on the 5♠ turn. He tried doing the same for the river, but this time it didn’t work out as the last card was indeed a heart 5♥.

Nikolaou Spidridon finished in 35th place and will take home 4,200€.

Tayfun Rodoplu checked from under the gun on a board of 5♠A♥6♠2♥. With 500,000 chips already in the middle, Vasileios Zisis put him all-in from the hijack for 330,000 chips.

Rodoplu took a few minutes to think things through but eventually found the call for his tournament life.

Not only are there free Hawaiian Lei for all competitors and not only is Telly Bartolo sporting a flowery shirt on most days of the festival, but even some of the tournament names reflect the festival’s blossoming theme. The latest side event to begin here on Monday is the €250 No Limit Hold’em “Old School Bloom” tournament. It has been running now for a couple of levels and there are still over three hours for late registrants to join the game.

Vasileios Zisis – Chip leader of Day 2 has been once again involved in a massive pot after he three-bet Alessio Mastrosimone’s open. Alessio called and there were three spades on the Q♠8♠3♠ flop. Zisis was the first to act from the big blind made a small bet and got called. The turn was 9♠ which completed a one-card flush draw and Zisis bet another 205,000 into the big pot, Mastrosimone’s response was a bit delayed, but he called.

Zisis put forward his rare-for-the-table orange chips – each worth 100,000 and put his opponent in a tough spot. Mastrosimone had to play for his tournament life, he tanked for about 6-7 minutes before throwing his cards away.

Giuseppe Rosa opened from under the gun and Jakub Bosko re-raised to 130,000 on the cutoff. Sebastian Vincendeau decided to flat from the small blind and Rosa completed the action.

The 6♦T♥8♣ flop was checked by all three players, the 9♥ turn too and the river 7♦ completed a six to ten straight on the board, once again everyone checked. Vinendeau showed his Q♠Q♣ first with a look of disapproval and Rosa showed his J♣9♣ for a higher straight before Bosko could manage to turn his cards.

The queens of Vincendeau only lost his 130,000 but he certainly didn’t look happy with the outcome.

On the A♣ river Busatto put Pace all-in for his final 145,000 chips and Pace quickly check-called for a third time. Busatto reluctantly showed his 7♠6♥ for a missed draw, and Pace tabled T♦7♣ for third pair.

He celebrated loudly as he stacked up his chips and climbed to a stack of nearly 20 big blinds.

Lithuanian poker players are a well traveled bunch and they roam in packs. It’s rare to see just one or two Lithuanians at an overseas poker event, if you see one there’s probably at least a dozen of them in the event. The Battle of Malta is a popular event with players from northern Europe, and there are strong links between the Baltics and Malta. Casino Malta is owned by Olympic Casinos, the dominant casino chain in Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia. It’s therefore no surprise that over 30 Lithuanians have made their way here for the Spring Edition and that doesn’t just include players, as the Battle of Malta’s media coordinator, Jason Glatzer is indeed a resident of Vilnius.

During the first break of Day 3 of the Battle of Malta Main Event, I thought I’d grab a word with one of the Lithuanians, Modestas Kryzanauskas, who had already won the Montecarlo House Poker side event earlier in the festival and was third in chips overnight going into day 3.

I approached him saying “Hey Modestas, how did the first few levels of the day go?” and received the mortifying reply “I’m not Modestas,” but before I had time to regret my mistake, he added “but I do know him, I’m also Lithuanian.”

The player I had mistaken for Modestas was his friend Eimantas Pleksavicius, so instead of chatting to Modestas I had a short chat with him instead. He started the day on just under 500,000 chips, but lost a few pots early on to drop to 200,000. However, he was able to double up again with pocket jacks and went into the break with 450,000, happy to have laddered up the payouts. With 52 players left, the current payout for exits is €3,500. This is not his first visit to Malta, las year Eimantas made a final table in a side event during the 2023 Spring Edition, cashing for €4,030. He now needs to finish in 39th or better to record his biggest ever live cash.

Vasileios Zisis started day 3 as the chip leader with a 1,6 million stack. He opened yet another pot and Mariusz Janczarski flatted from the small blind. Janczarski check-raised the 65,000 bet to 180,000 on the 8♣3♦9♣ flop and got a call from Zisis. The turn was another diamond 7♦ which completed some eventual straights and there were two flush draws on the board now. A big bet of 375,000 was made by Janczarski and the Day 2 chip leader called again.

The river was 2♣ and both players checked with the first flush draw completing the board. Janczarski showed T♣T♦ and Zisis opened A♦A♠ and won the 1,300,000 pot with his pocket aces. Lucky for Janczarski was lucky he didn’t lose more on this hand.

France’s Antoine Talvard is once again running deep in the Battle of Malta Main Event. One year ago, he took 18th place in the 2023 Battle of Malta Spring Edition €600 Main Event for €5,430. He also had a deep run during the 2023 Battle of Malta Autumn Edition €600 Main Event, before bowing out in 56th place for €4,690.

Talvard believes he will have a deeper run this time around and thus far has already bested his autumn finish as he is in the mix with one of the shorter stacks of 500,000, with just 45 players remaining.

“I’m sure I’m going to win,” Talvard shared when we asked how he felt about his deep run this time around. “Confidence is the best killer.”

Talvard, who fired a single bullet into this event before advancing through the Day 1b flight, shared that a small mistake led to a big hand.

“I misclicked in one hand which turned into quads,” Talvard explained, when asked about any memorable moments.

We had to make sure we heard correctly, but indeed life is good if you’re getting your misclicks rewarded.

Confidence can take you far and we wish Talvard the best of luck in getting the job done. Either way, he has had an amazing run in three Battle of Malta Main Events in a row.

Cristiano sat in the tank for several minutes, but eventually laid his cards down and left himself with less than ten big blinds. Lindqwist, on the other hand, ended up with more than time times as much as his opponent.

He qualified well from Day1 and then played a very complicated tournament on Day2, always attacking to recover. He managed to close very well and then on the second level of Day3 he doubled up with a full house of Aces and Jacks which brought him back to average. “A wonderful experience anyway, a wonderful deep run even if now there is obviously a bit of disappointment. A stratospheric structure but if I had won the coup I would have gone to 1.6 million and I could have played my game.”

The last standing female player in the tournament is no more. Japanese Yuri Ishida busted in 59th place for €3,500.  She was the only female player to make it to Day 3 of the tournament, while Bixi Yao who was eliminated on Day 2 was the second last.

Yuri is a very experienced player and has played, cashed and won tournaments all over the world, seemingly non-stop for the last twelve years. She has lifetime live poker earnings of almost $700,000 and this is already her 6th live cash of 2024. Prior to traveling to Malta she took part in the Asian Poker Tour’s Taipei festival, cashing in three side events within four days.

Unfortunately we missed her exit hand, but we think there’s a high chance she will turn up for tonight’s High Roller, in which case, we’ll try to grab a world with her and find out how she exited the tournament.

Lyanyi Lu who stone-bubbled Day 1B with a flip AK vs. QQ for a 400,000 stack still managed to get into Day 2 and even Day 3. He was heads-up against Marko Luksa who limped the small blind. Lu raised him to 50,000 and Luksa called and checked the 6♦7♣5♥ flop, Lu on the other side bet 100,000 and got shoved for his remaining 250,000 chips.

Lu didn’t look happy and stomped his chips on the table for the call. His opponent turned 3♠7♠ top pair and a gut shot, Lu had pocket jacks J♦J♣ and got up from his seat even before the 9♣ turn, he then said to the near floor man “I go home” and the dealer stuck the 3♦ on the river. Looks like Lu knew what was coming for him and that’s exactly what happened.

During the Battle of Malta, the main focus is what goes on at the tables, with most interest centered on who’s got the big stacks, crazy hands. outlandish bluffs and ultimately who walks away with the trophy and the €100,000 first prize. It might seem straightforward to players, who arrive, buy their tickets, take their seats and play their hands. They win, they lose, they walk away or they collect a prize, job done. 

But behind the scenes of any poker event there’s a lot going on and the Battle of Malta isn’t just any poker event, it’s one of the biggest of its kind.

So who does all this work, who are the people that make the whole operation run as smoothly as possible? And what are the challenges they face each year, to keep the event fresh, relevant and maintain it as the biggest event in Europe in the €500-€600 range?

The Battle of Malta is owned and organised by Casino Malta, located in St Julian’s within the Intercontinental Hotel. The two key people who on behalf of Casino Malta run the show, are the Battle Of Malta’s Event Director of Logistics Telly Bartolo and Diane Fenech, Head of Operations.

They take care of all the pre-event planning and are on site throughout the event to make sure things run according to plan. Any event with as many unique visitors as the Battle of Malta requires a lot of planning, as there are health and safety regulations that need to be adhered to and security protocols to follow, both to ensure its a safe environment to play in and to maintain the fairness of the games.

Once the event begins, there’s a lot to do onsite and their jobs become turbo charged. You’ve probably seen Telly on the floor at the event, welcoming players on the microphone with a charismatic and energetic style that betrays just how much he loves his job. That is just a small part of his job, as there’s a lot to do when the event is underway, to ensure everything runs according to plan.

Diane is not always on the poker room floor, but is equally as busy, managing relationships with suppliers and sponsors. If things don’t go entirely to plan, they are there to solve any issues and get things back on track as quickly as possible.

To put on a show like this requires careful and co-ordinated planning. First of all the convention hall needs to be booked and this needs to be done well in advance of the event even being announced, as there’s high demand for conference space in Malta. Once the dates are determined, the tournament schedule needs to be prepared, tournament staff (dealers, chip controllers, floor staff, registration desk tellers, technicians, set crew and service staff) all need to be hired and their accommodation booked. For such a large event, over 200 dealers and floor staff are needed and most of these don’t live in Malta.

There’s lots of logistics and workflow to organise, but there’s also marketing and promotion of the event that needs to be done, because if you don’t tell people about your event, who’s gonna come, right? Well, in the case of the Battle of Malta that might not be such a great concern, as its such a well established poker brand now that people add it to their calendars as soon as they hear it being announced. But no event can rest on its laurels and simply assume the players will turn up. The Battle of Malta has established a wide network of partner sites who run online qualifiers, sponsor side events and generally help to increase awareness of the event.

Diane Fenech and Telly Bartolo are the fuel that keeps the engine running at the Battle of Malta. Once this event is over their attentions will turn to planning the next event in the autumn.

Una volta che l’evento ha inizio, c’è molto da fare in loco e il loro lavoro diventa turbo. Una volta determinate le date, occorre preparare il programma del torneo, assumere il personale del torneo (croupier, controllori delle fiches, personale a terra, cassieri del banco di registrazione, tecnici, addetti alle scenografie e personale di servizio) e prenotare il loro alloggio. Per un evento così grande, sono necessari oltre 200 dealer e personale di sala e la maggior parte di questi non vive a Malta.

C’è un sacco di logistica e di flusso di lavoro da organizzare, ma c’è anche il marketing e la promozione dell’evento da fare, perché se non si dice alla gente del proprio evento, chi verrà, giusto? Nel caso della Battaglia di Malta, questo potrebbe non essere un problema, dato che si tratta di un marchio di poker talmente affermato che la gente lo aggiunge al calendario non appena ne viene annunciato l’inizio. Ma nessun evento può riposare sugli allori e dare per scontato che i giocatori si presentino. Il Battle of Malta ha creato un’ampia rete di siti partner che gestiscono qualificazioni online, sponsorizzano eventi collaterali e in generale contribuiscono a far conoscere l’evento.

I have developed a good friendship over the years with Greece’s Fotios Ntamaris, who is one of the handful of Greek players remaining. He came out with a group associated with Novibet to the Battle of Malta after having a blast during the autumn.

I met Fotios in Bratislava many years ago when he was running deep in an event. His good friend nicknamed Gogitos was also my former colleague, who made the introductions that eventually allowed us to blossom into a good and fun friendship.

Fotios and I have been on the same path as of late. While I was commentating on the Norwegian Championships and Poker North Masters in Bratislava in the middle of March, Fotios was grinding away. We also traveled together yet separately to the Irish Poker Open before heading to the amazing Battle of Malta.

“We are on the same route,” Fotios noticed.

I like working and playing festivals with a fun vibe including the Battle of Malta for many years and Fotios, who we have featured in my walk-around videos both this festival and the one in October, feels the same for the most part when he chooses where to travel for live poker.

Fotios began the day with a big stack of 1,305,000. He was down to 800,000 moments ago, but this was still good for 40 big blinds with the blinds recently increasing to 10,000/20,000 along with a 20,000 big blind ante.

“There are still too many people left so anything can happen,” shared Fotios. “But I am confident that I will play my best and hope to bag a stack into Day 4.”

It wasn’t the easiest start for Fotios as he fired one bullet on Day 1c only to bubble at the end of the day to miss out on a bag and a min-cash. He then fired another bullet in the final turbo flight Day 1e. This went into the dust as well but the third time was a charm. He max-late registered for the tournament on Day 1e and about 30 minutes later he was noticed with around five times his starting stack. He shared that one big hand for him was when his aces held against queens. Day 2 went even better and is in good shape despite the slow start on Day 3.

“What is the dynamic when you have other Greek players you are friendly with at the table?” we asked.

“We typically go against each other even harder than other players,” Fotios said with a grin. “There is some pride involved as we often play against each other locally.”

We wish Fotios and the Greek poker community the best of luck in their quest for the title and the €100,000 top prize which will be awarded under the lights and cameras to a live-streamed audience.

Both Voto and Busatto checked throughout the Q♦7♥3♦K♦8♠ board and they both revealed ace-high – A♠T♥ for Voto and A♦9♣ for Busatto. Luke Pace was quick to show his two-pair Q♥3♥ and he managed to get back to a healthy stack with a little more than 260,000 chips.

One of the side events that began yesterday was the €250 PKO Full Tilt Catania Regressive. There were 250 entries yesterday, of which 102 made it into today’s second day, which is when the regressive part of the tournaments’s name comes into play. What this means is simply that at the start of Day 2, the blinds are rolled back three levels to the beginning of level 10, having played 12 levels yesterday. Play has resumed and so far a further 70 players have entered, with still more than 30 minutes before registration closes.

Another quick call followed from D’Amore, after which Pace tabled Q♣9♠ for a pair of nines. It was no good against D’Amore’s A♥6♥, and his top pair shipped him a nice pot to climb back after a rough start.

Pace, meanwhile, was left with just five big blinds in the early stages of Day 3.

We caught up with the hand on the K♠4♠Q♥9♦ on the turn when Rasmus Sepping fired out for 100,000 into a pot of a bit more. Crocifisso Turco tanked for about a minute before he called.

Sepping over-jammed for 990,000. Turco initially looked like he was in pain and tanked for at least three minutes while relentlessly sucking on a smokeless device before asking for a count.

He then went into the tank for another five minutes while the table patiently awaited his decision. Due to the size of the pot, the players gave Turco all the time he needed and didn’t call the clock. Eventually, Turco made the call but immediately had regrets.

Sepping turned over the J♠T♥ for the turned nut-straight. Turco attempted to muck his hand but the dealer turned it over as it was an all-in and a call to show he had two pair with Q♠9♥.

It appeared that Sepping had the chip lead after the hand while Turco hit the rail shortly after this hand after losing his 10-15 big blind stack.

The 2024 Battle of Malta Spring Edition’s Main Event final starting took place on Sunday at the Intercontinental Hotel’s Eden Arena. Soon after it ended, the remaining 272 players contested Day 2 and all in the prize money, securing at least a min-cash, worth €900.

Vasileios Zisis had the best Day 2 of all the remaining players, tripling the 534,000 chips he brought from Day 1 to end the day as the chip leader on 1,605,000. He will start Day 3 with the biggest stack of the remaining 101 players. He has just 10,000 chips more than Jakub Bosko, which will be equivalent to a small blind when play resumes. Lithuanian Modestas Kryzanauskas, who sits in third with 1,400,000 has already tasted success at the festival, winning the €250 NLH MonteCarlo House Event on Saturday for €4,600.

Previous Battle of Malta winnere Daniel Barone will not be repeating his previous success however, as he was one of the first players to be eliminated at the start of the day, having been one of the shortest stacks to squeeze into day 2.

Chip leaders from Day 1b (Christopher Grech) and Day 1c (Nicola Ciraolo) both  managed to build their stacks on Day 2,  while Day 1a’s overnight chip leader Vidar Oie busted in 112th. The average stack is 539,000 going into Day 3, which will be 36 big blinds. 

Day 3 resumes at 1pm on Monday 8th April and will continue until 24 players remain.

The final flight of the main event began early on Sunday morning and saw a further 347 entrants take their last chance gasps to get into Day 2. It concluded shortly before 6pm, giving the 52 surviving players from the flights just over an hour to rest themselves for the restart at 7pm.  Salvatore Saracino (483,000) took the largest stack of the flight into the second day of the tournament, with Domas Janonis (449,000) and Jordi Ruiz (445,000) also finishing well.

The FLIP (Fantastic Ladies in Poker) Ladies Event was scheduled to have its final table live streamed, however a late decision was made to begin coverage at the start of the event. The event started at 4pm, with live coverage on the Battle of Malta’s social channels, on a 30-minute delay. Jason Glatzer called the action from the commentary booth. The pre-tournament favourite to win the event was Emma “Emzy” Oliver, justifiably so, as she has previously won two BOM ladies events, both at this time of year. The popular British player did indeed go close to completing her hat-trick, making the final table, but exited in 5th place. Emma had shoved all-in with Q♥8♥, trying to isolate short-stacked Florence, who had moved in with 9♦9♥, but ran into Patrisha, who held A♦A♣. Both players were eliminated during that hand.

Patrisha went into the heads up stage with the chip lead, but was pegged back by Cheng Peng and defeated when her K♥9♣ lost out to A♣4♦. Cheng, from Singapore is no stranger to final tables, having made dozens of them during the 14 years she has been poker. In the end her experience was too great for Patrisha, who also made last year’s final in this event, finishig in 4th place.

€250 PKO Full Tilt Catania Regressive End of Day 1

The €250 PKO Full Tilt Catania Regressive is a two day progressive knock out event in which the blinds get rolled back by three levels when they restart play. It attracted a sizeable field of 250 players, 103 of whom have made it through to Day 2. . Play resumes at 2pm on Monday afternoon.

Stavros Petychakis Wins the €220 Dark Knight III (€5,780)

The Dark Night made its third appearance at the festival on Sunday, this time accommodating 94 players, in pursuit of the the €15,390 prize pool. It was another late finish, with Greek player Stavros Petychsakis claiming the title at 5.15am! Stavros made the money in last month’s Novibet Euro Poker Championship in Bratislava, but this is both his first title and his biggest cash ever.

Dmitrij Bogdanov Wins €330 PLO 4/5 Card Round of Each (€4,060)

Today’s non-Hold’em tournament was a €330 4/5 Card Round of Each event. It was won by Dane Dmitri Bogdanov, who topped a field of 42 players. Despite having made many final tables in the past, this was his maiden victory in a live festival event.

Monday’s Tournament Schedule at the Battle of Malta

The main event progresses to Day 3 on Monday 8th April, with the 101 remaining contestants resuming play at 1pm. They will battle it out until just 24 poker warriors remain, all eying up the €100,000 first prize. The €250 Full Tilt Catania PKO also returns for its second day at 1pm and there are four other tournaments that will start today.

The first of today’s side events is the €250 NLH Old School Bloom tournament, with a name in keeping with the springtime theme of the festival. Pot Limit Omaha fans have a rare Omaha Knockout (regular non-progressive bounty) to get involved with and there is also a €200 buy NLH tournament sponsored by the IPF (Italian Poker Federation). The most anticipated of today’s side events is the Amazingbet sponsored High Roller, with a €1,100 buy-in. The high roller is another two-day tournament and late registration will be open until the start of Day 2 on Tuesday.

Spidridon flopped two pair on 4♠4♦K♠ and had Saddemi drawing to a queen on the Q♣ turn. The T♣ river hit instead and Saddemi celebrated shortly, before he realized he did not make the best hand.

Dimitrios Anastasakis min-raised from the cutoff before Jokubas Jancevicius jammed his short stack of 200,000 from the small blind.

Paolo Alampi tanked for about a minute from the big blind before he asked for a count. He tanked for about two more minutes before he called. Anastasakis quickly folded and Alampi had some regrets about his decision.

But the 6♥ river came instead of a king for Jancevicius to gain some breathing room instead of hitting the rail.

Welcome to Day 3 of the 2024 Battle of Malta €600 Main Event at Casino Malta and the adjoining Eden Arena at the Intercontinental Hotel located in the heart of St. Juliens.
